Do you have a will? Yeah, I know what you’re thinking… you don’t need a will? You’re too young to need a will? Why tempt fate? Why jinx yourself? And on and on and on. Believe me, I’ve made every single one of those excuses myself over the past few years, and probably a few more that I’ve forgotten. But, the truth is, if you don’t have a will, you really do need to think about one. I say this because a couple of weeks ago, I contracted this year’s strain of the flu – you know the one, it’s claimed many lives already this year. Well, let me tell you, I thought it was going to claim me, too. I’ve never been so sick in my entire life, nor do I ever want to be that sick again.
However, there is one thing that I did learn from being that sick… while I was lying there, in and out of it, it dawned on me that if I actually were to become a casualty, the one person that should have everything that I own might not actually be able to inherit it because I don’t have a will leaving it specifically to that person. And even worse, with no will, it would all have to go through probate… and during that time, my house, the cars, everything could be gone. Not a good feeling, lying there sick, worrying that should something happen, your loved ones wouldn’t be taken care of, is it?
Don’t make the mistake of not providing for those you love… make out a will. Protect your loved ones AND your assets. It only takes a little bit of time, and doesn’t require a lot of money, either.
